Essay on the Confused Yet Creative Incomplete Open Cube

Sol LeWitt (American, 1928-2007)


Struggling to find a way out, itching to escape, trying to find any possible way to get out. Yet, there is no way. Closed at this end, open near the other. One exit lies beside another, but there is no way to come free. Why is the Incomplete Open Cube incomplete? How is it incomplete? Sol LeWitt is the artist of this confused yet creative cube. One brilliant mind, some painted aluminum, and a design so impossible and indescribable comes alive.

If the incomplete open cube is just a vision, only some of us can really imagine its amazing qualities. Only some of us can really think about and really know what it is all about. Seeing that escapism could be a possible theme of the incomplete open cube, we see it and just think of it as merely just a idiotic sculpture, or as the artist prefers to call it, a structure. A structure that we might think why one mindless artist might have sculpted for no apparent reason that we as humans with picky characteristics might stop and look at. Or, one might think so. Others, on the other hand might halt in front of it and think: what is this? Why is this important? Why did the artist make this wonderful or stupid creation, because as we see today, it has ended up in a very famous museum. Even though the creation has made it this far, why has it been created? Or, what might the artist be feeling when he made this? Was Sol LeWitt in depression? Was he trying to escape from someone or something? What was he trying to express? Sol LeWitt has created a miracle that only few might see as a miracle and few might see as a pointless piece of art.

So, who really was the mastermind behind this memorable masterpiece? Sol LeWitt, 1928-2007 was a thoughtful artist. Creating these three dimensional structures was his passion. Since most of his work has been abstract three dimensional figures, the question is where did he get his inspiration? Sol LeWitt's different yet outstanding ideas for these structures was creating open objects that expressed himself and just thinking open ever since he started being an artist. Seeing that this was his inspiration, we now know the secret of the Incomplete Open Cube.

In my own words, the Incomplete Open Cube, as I have now learned is just the artist's way of thinking open, his way of expressing how he felt when he first started being an artist. Unlike my thoughts at first, how somehow the artist was trying to escape. However, it was really just Sol LeWitt trying to feel alive through his art. Creating structures like these really express how he feels.
